What Is Skinvive? Why Do I Need To Try It?

what is skinvive

*Ring Ring*, *Ring Ring*

Glowing skin called. It’s requesting Skinvive.

We all love our medical-grade skincare products, trust me. There is nothing like that AM and PM skincare routine. Don’t we all love looking like a glazed donut at night after putting on our serums, a luxurious moisturizer, and maybe some facial oil if we’re feeling extra snazzy? Of course, we do!

But wouldn’t it be nice to feel the difference of skincare, from the inside out? Say no more, because Juvederm just changed the game for all of us.

What is Skinvive? What does it do?

SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® is the first and only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) microdroplet injectable in the US to improve skin smoothness of the cheeks.

Lyndsay Hakker, our amazing in-house Allergan Trainer & co-founder, attended the launch of Skinvive in D.C. this September and gave us all of the details behind Skinvive and why it is so revolutionary.

“I personally have been waiting for this product for over five years.  I am a science nerd, especially when it comes to innovation in regenerative medicine.

I think from the studies, we've really found that one of the biggest components of aging is something called aquaporin and that's in our cells. Aquaporin actually is in charge of processing water and hyaluronic acid in and out of our cells.

So if you think about it, if our dermis is young, and it has all these cells with aquaporin in it, and it's creating this fluid and this energy – so it's dense.

Then as we age, we lose aquaporin. So once the aquaporin is out of our cells, it's kind of like a grape going into a raisin, right?

There really hasn't been any other product on the market that really helps us get that aquaporin back into our cells until Skinvive (or Volite in Europe and Canada).

So I think this product is going to be instrumental in really giving that natural but impactful results and really hydrating our skin from the inside out.”

Is it a filler?

“Skinvive is an impactful moisturizer, not a filler. It's not going to change your face shape. It's not going to change anything other than hydrating your skin from the inside out.”

What will Skinvive help with?

“In addition to a gorgeous glow, it can really help with reds and even acne scarring. Think of it like you got a facial – But it lasts six to seven months!”

Who is a candidate for Skinvive?

Skinvive is for all ages and skin types! Whether you are a baby-faced 21-year-old or an older adult who is looking to level up their skin even more (because we trust that you have a fire skincare routine already) – Skinvive is for you!

“Skinvive is the boyfriend of Botox (or Daxxify if that’s your choice of tox)”, according to Nicole Dowler RN, BSN, and we agree!

After all we have learned about the differences between Botox and Fillers, we have Skinvive which is the addition we’ve been missing that changes the appearance of your skin.

Aluma Injector Brenna Derakshan RN, BSN says:

“Pretty much everyone over 25-30 can benefit from it.

Where filler does a fabulous job of augmenting, filling in, shaping, and reducing shadows, it can’t really be injected too close to the top layer of skin because it could appear bumpy.

So now to fill that gap, there is #SkinVive.

It’s for skin that is dull, tired looking, lacking that glow and supple appearance.

For that, we try to use devices and other collagen producers that do work well. But now in conjunction with that, we have this - which is a Hyaluronic Acid that can spread softly right under the skin, drawing in water and working on the channels to increase water.

Giving hydration, glow, glass skin, the appearance of having slept for hours, like an injectable moisturizer.”

Patient Experience

So now you know the facts, but what is Skinvive really like? Well, the verdict is in! Hear it from our two patients below and learn about their personal experiences.

The most notable difference of Skinvive is the injection pattern. Here is an example:

Skinvive Injection Pattern

The blue dots represent the areas where one will be injected. This example is for a ‘normal skin patient’. Those with more skin creepiness and wrinkles may have more pokes.

Patient A (23 year old female)

“My skin has never been a major issue for me.

Sure, I get breakouts here and there because I’m human, but overall it isn’t ‘too bad’.

I think that is due to taking great care of my skin – getting facials once a month, regularly getting treated with Daxxify, and using medical-grade skincare from Skin Medica – but honestly, I just want that extra glow!

I would consider my skin type as dry, especially during the Fall and Winter seasons. So I figured there was no better time than the present to give this a shot!

I have heard amazing things about Skinvive and was excited to give this a try.”

4 weeks post-treatment:

What did the treatment feel like? Was it painful?

“Not painful at all!

I was numb and barely felt the pokes.

One special thing that my injector did was have me hold a mini electric massager (like this one here: Mini Massager).

This was a great distraction and would definitely benefit those with a lower pain tolerance or that have some anxiety around the treatment.

The grid for Skinvive looks a little intimidating since there are so many pokes – but I honestly feel like I normally find Botox/ Daxxi injections more painful. It was totally manageable!”

Have you noticed a difference?

“I mean, the photos speak for themselves!

My skin is GLOWING.

I am not the only one noticing either! From injection to now, I would say I noticed a real difference after the full 4-weeks, which was disclosed and expected.

Post-injection, there was no downtime. I did have a tiny little bruise, but that was all.

At 3 weeks, I started to notice a difference in my skin texture. I have a few really dilated pores – and they were definitely less visible.

Especially now after 4 weeks, I feel like my skin is brighter, smoother, and again, glowing!”

Do you recommend Skinvive?

“Yes, yes, and yes.

Friends and family have even been asking about what I have been doing with my skin – the only difference being Skinvive.

So it goes to show that Skinvive truly offers noticeable results. I think being in my young twenties I was apprehensive on how effective it would really be since my skin isn’t ‘that bad’ – but the difference is there, and I will definitely be getting treated again at the 6-month mark.”

Patient B ( 38 year old female)

“My skin has always been my biggest struggle.

I grew up with acne and was at the tail end of the generation where we rubbed baby oil all over ourselves before laying out in the sun for hours on end.

Getting burned was a good thing (hello ‘base tan’!) and man did it take a toll on my skin.

I was trying to overly dry it out (#1 acne misconception of all time!) with acidic toners and spot-treating with toothpaste, while also letting it roast in the sunlight.

Up until about 3 years ago, I really wasn’t taking care of my skin, and it showed. I now care more for my skin than I do my own pets (just kidding, they always come first, but you know what I mean).

I’ve moved all of my skincare to medical grade (Alastin, Revision, and ZO), and do chemical peels and microneedling to help with texture.

But what I’ve realized my skin aches for is something to help with its hydration internally, not externally. And I’m so happy that there is a product on the market that does that now!“

4 Weeks Post Treatment:

What did the treatment feel like? Was it painful?

“From the start of the procedure, it was about a 1 on the pain scale.

I topically numbed, which helped a bit, but here’s my Pro Tip: I would rest an ice pack on my cheeks instead of using numbing cream.

The actual process of injecting was super quick, it was the numbing that took the longest.

I felt a few of the needle insertions, mostly the ones around my upper cheek area, and they weren’t painful at all. I think both cheeks were done in 5 minutes.

After about 10 minutes, the needle points were nearly unnoticeable.

That night I gently washed my face and made sure to not apply my retinol or any skincare with active ingredients that could irritate.

The next day the only remnant of the treatment was a teeny tiny bruise on only one of my cheeks.”

Have you noticed a difference?

“Absolutely!

I keep getting compliments on my skin and the only treatment I can attribute it to would be Skinvive.

I especially feel it internally as we are approaching the fall/ cooler weather months.

My skin would normally be drier than the Sahara desert, but it’s been surprisingly dewey!”

Would you recommend Skinvive?

“Oh, 100%!

I have already told anyone who would listen about my Skinvive results!

My favorite “selling point” is that it can last up to 6 months. Who doesn’t want a treatment that you only have to get twice a year that gives you the glazed donut look you get after a facial?

I’m all for a nice relaxing spa day when you can treat yourself, but who has the time to do that monthly?! I need something that will give me those results that’ll last!”
